ISO 9606-1 Qualification Extension: Essential Variables and What Invalidates It

What is Qualification Extension?

ISO 9606-1:2012 defines the conditions under which a qualification obtained in a given test automatically covers other welding configurations — without needing to repeat the test. This extended coverage is called qualification extension (or range of qualification).

The principle is straightforward: if a welder can perform a more demanding task, they are implicitly qualified for less demanding tasks within certain limits.

Essential Variables

Essential variables are parameters whose modification invalidates the existing qualification and requires a new test. ISO 9606-1 defines the following categories:

1. Welding Process

  • Each process (111, 135, 141, etc.) requires its own qualification
  • A combination of processes in one test qualifies for that combination
  • Change of main process → new test mandatory

2. Filler Material (Consumable)

  • Classified by coating type (electrodes) or wire composition
  • Change between consumable groups may invalidate the qualification
  • Refer to Table 3 of the standard for applicable groups

3. Joint Type and Welding Position

Test performedAlso covers
Butt weld (BW) in any positionFillet weld (FW) in all positions
Fillet weld (FW)Fillet welds only
PA (flat)PA only
PC (horizontal)PA and PC
PF (vertical upward)PA, PF and PG
H-L045 (inclined upward)All positions

4. Base Material Thickness

Test thickness (t)Range covered
t < 3 mmt to 2t
3 mm ≤ t ≤ 12 mm3 mm to 2t
t > 12 mm≥ 5 mm

5. Pipe Diameter (if applicable)

Test diameter (D)Range covered
D ≤ 25 mmD to 2D
25 mm < D ≤ 150 mm0.5D to 2D (min. 25 mm)
D > 150 mm≥ 0.5D (min. 75 mm)

What Invalidates the Qualification

Changes outside the above limits require a new test. Practical examples:

  • Changing from process 111 (SMAW) to 135 (GMAW) → new test required
  • Welding in PG when only qualified in PF → new test required
  • Thickness of 25 mm when qualified with t=10 mm (covers up to 20 mm) → new test required
  • Change of material group (e.g., C-Mn steel to stainless steel) → new test required

Do NOT invalidate the qualification (non-essential variables):

  • Brand change of consumable within the same group
  • Electrical parameter adjustment within the process
  • Change of welding equipment

---

Validity and Renewal

Qualification under ISO 9606-1 is valid for 3 years, renewable annually by confirmation from the responsible welding coordinator or examiner, provided the welder works continuously in the field (max. 6-month interruption).

Renewal at 3 years: full new test or documented equivalent.
